Kiwi Update—Ten Dollars Well Spent
On a normal Tuesday afternoon at Christianity Explored bible study a Chinese lady unknown to the group attended. She is a mature lady, not the typical language student, and had heard the bible study announcement at News Watch on Monday evening. She was very quiet during the study, and most of us wondered if she understood what we were discussing. At the end of the hour when this polite lady began to ask a few questions it was evident her English was quite good and she had understood. She said she had never read from the Bible before and found it interesting. One of the ISM workers asked her if she would like to have a Bible and in what language. She responded that she would like to read one and would like to read it in English. Because most of these meetings happen in borrowed space, the ISM person had taken up the practice of carrying extra bibles in his backpack. The lady received a paperback copy of the full Bible in New International Version with a short explanation of the organization. She was thankful, and the meeting adjourned. On Wednesday, the next day, the lady attended a Bible Storytelling event in which the story of Abram’s call was presented and discussed. Again she was quiet, but toward the end spoke a few observations about the story. Then she said she had read a few pages of the Bible and enjoyed it. It turns out she read the first six or seven chapters of Genesis. She said, “I have heard the story of the big boat and flood before, but I never knew it was from the Bible. I have heard young people talk about the boat. They talk about the boat as a symbol of hope. This Bible is a good book, and I will read more.” When I heard her quiet, wise proclamation my smile was involuntary. I thought, “Wow, Lord. That was ten dollars well spent.” Maybe it was twelve dollars, but you get the point. Thanks to God for his written word, and thanks to his people who gave the money to distribute bibles. Thanks to New Zealand Bible Society for making the books available at reasonable prices.
